Seminar: Understanding Olfaction and Odors

Seminar Topics:     

·       Understanding the Canine Olfactory system.  - How the canine nose works.

·       Breathing  vs. Sniffing

·       Theory of scent discrimination.

·       The Odor molecule. - Factors Influencing Odor   

·       Temp  -  Wind -  Humidity  -  Environment.

·       Definitions -- Use of training aids – containment and handling.

·       Utilizing  your knowledge of Odors and Olfaction in K9 Nosework®.       

·       Training scenarios and environmental issues.

·       Problem Solving Workshop – Review of detection dog training scenarios. 

This seminar is for everyone who has a dog and is interested in how dogs use their nose to detect odors. This all day seminar will cover the areas of Canine Olfaction, how the canine nose works, scent discrimination, factors effecting odors and utilizing your knowledge of Odors and Olfaction in the field of K9 Detection and the sport of K9 Nosework®.

This Seminar is Day 1 of Fred’s three day event.  Days 2 and 3 are Working Days (Foundation to Finesse) for twelve dog/handler teams each day.  Half the teams will audit and half will work in the morning. In the afternoon teams will flipflop, with the morning auditors working their dogs and the morning working teams auditing.  Attendance at Day 1 is mandatory for attending Day 2 or Day 3.

Fred Helfers will provide class and field instruction to the handlers on how to build from foundational handling skills to the finesse handling skills that are required in competition.  Maximum of 12 working teams each day. 

These training sessions will assist the nose work handler in identifying and strengthening those problem areas of handling their dog.  The workshop is an eight hour day with teams working their dogs for half a day and also auditing half the class.  Additional auditors also allowed.

Utilizing a field and class training concept this workshop will focus on the following –

Ø   Reviewing the foundation of your dog’s training

Ø  Understanding your role as a handler in the foundation of the team’s training

Ø  Overview of Odor Theory from Olfaction and Odor seminar

Ø  Overview of Handler Error Traits and how to train to problem-solve these areas

Practical Sessions will demonstrate simple exercises to build on the foundation to more complex handler involvement exercises.

NWB1, Introduction to Nose Work, is the first of the two core beginner courses for K9 Nose Work(R).  In this course we'll begin teaching your dog to search/hunt independently and with purpose.  We'll work containers and interiors, two of the four standard search elements.  The other two elements are exteriors and vehicles and we'll get to those soon enough!  : )  In this course you'll also begin to learn your dog's hunt style.  You'll be working on and off leash.  Only one dog will search at a time, while the others are crated.  Crates and exercise pens are provided.  Please bring water/bowl and yummy treats or favorite toy to reward your dog.  Be prepared to be amazed and to have fun.  Your dog will love it!  K9 Nose Work(R) is a wonderful outlet for your dog's energy, both mentally and physically, yet it's easy and interesting for the handler.  6 weeks/$120
