NWB1 is the first of two foundation courses in the K9 Nose Work series and sets the stage for beginning handler skills as well as building the dog's drive to search. Almost all dogs love nose work! It is something they do naturally, and for once we have a team sport in which they get to be the lead partner. Through nose work they get to use their own talents, their own way, and we learn to read and recognize their body language and signature alert. K9 Nose Work is based on drug and bomb detection dog work except that no one is ever in danger in this sport. Nose work uses lots of mental energy and is a great boredom buster and confidence builder for the dog! It can be played anytime, anywhere. All dogs are invited to try nose work as every dog is crated or in an ex-pen between searches so that the environment is always safe for each dog. Even anxious dogs learn to safely forget their worries as they focus on finding the source of the target odor! You may participate in Nose Work as a fun hobby or as a competitive sport.
NWB2 is the second of the foundation courses and we add the target odor of birch to our searches. We will search containers, vehicles, exteriors and interiors and prepare for the birch ORT (Odor Recognition Test).
Nose Work is for handler/dog teams who wish just to enjoy a fun hobby together and also for those who wish to compete together. All are welcome!
